Icelandic singer-songwriter
Einar Örn Benediktsson of Ghostigital, formerly of the
Sugarcubes, was in London last week to record a song with the
Gorillaz, the virtual band created by Damon Albarn, for their
next album.
“I’m in a song with Mark E.
Smith, he is the captain and I’m the parrot,” Benediktsson
told Morgunbladid. A cartoon of him as a parrot is in
the making.
Benediktsson describes the
album as more accessible and more entertaining than the
Gorillaz’s previous albums.
A new Gorillaz website will
launch in February and the new album will be released shortly
afterwards.
Among other singers on the
album are Bobby Womack, Lou Reed and Barry Gibb, in addition
to Albarn himself.
Benediktsson said it is some
achievement for him to be included in a group of these great
musicians, “keeping in mind that I’m one of the ten worst
singers of all time,” he laughed.
UK music magazine Q
concluded in 2007, that while Björk was the 35th best singer
in history, her colleague from the Sugarcubes, Einar Örn
Benediktsson, was the fifth worst singer of all time.
