December 13,
2006 - NME.com:
Damon Albarn's band play festive
fan show
Four-piece perform some of
their album tracks twice
Damon
Albarn's new band played a special festive fan show at
an old music hall in London
last night (December 12).
Only 300 fans
were lucky enough to get into the one-off gig at
Wilton's
Music Hall after taking
part in a MySpace
competition.
The eventful
show, which was compered by
Harry Enfield's butler character
Mr Cholmondeley-Warner,
featured a series of circus acts in the build up including
magicians, contortionists and support act
Indigo Moss.
The gig was
only the four-piece's second major public performance after
their BBC Electric Proms
show at the Camden Roundhouse
last month.
As with their
previous show, the band, which includes
Paul Simonon of
The Clash, guitarist
Simon Tong of The
Verve and Gorillaz, and
Fela Kuti drummer
Tony Allen, played
their debut album 'The Good
The Bad And The Queen' in its entirety.
Only this
time they performed two of the LP's songs twice.
Following
forthcoming single 'Kingdom Of
Doom', Albarn
shouted to the audience: "That felt good. I think I wanna sing
that again. What d'you reckon?" before he was greeted with
massive cheers for a second rendition.
Later,
Albarn took in requests
from the audience for the final track. But he was unable to
decide what to play so after a quiet word in his ear from
Enfield, he settled for
'Three Changes' again.
As well as
songs from their album the band also performed
'Mr Whippy', the B-side
off recent single 'Herculean',
which featured guest vocalist
Eslaam Jawaad.
As
Albarn drew the show to
a close he said: "I wanted to create something with a bit of a
Christmas atmosphere tonight. Happy Christmas. I hope you have
a good time."
The complete
setlist was:
'History Song'
'80s Life'
'Northern Whale'
'Kingdom Of Doom'
'Kingdom Of Doom'

'Behind the Sun'
'Mr Whippy'
'The Bunting Song'
