Retrospectively, and against later albums, it is dated to its time. The prevailing indie sound was 'shoegaze', deep and plodding without direction. In this respect Blur had much more chart appeal than Chapterhouse or Lush.
Unpopular Blur opinion of late, Popscene is great (duh) but its message is kinda tepid.
