PA Intros/Outros

Post by Moritz » 31 Oct 2022, 18:08

One think I was always a bit fascinated by was the choice of intro and outro songs at live shows. I know that the chronology of Oasis' PA is well documented from old bootlegs (They played 'The Boys Are Back in Town' on the Be Here Now tour and 'This Guy Is In Love with You' to death). But in case of Blur it depends on the lenghts of the tapes, but you can hear the old movie music by Quincy Jones and Anita Harris during Showtime. And a theremin cover of 'The Swans' was played during the first half of 1997 as well. But it seems that Blur don't realy changed these intro/outro tapes.

I recently stumpled over a full live recording of the gig at Rotterdam from 1991 and the full intro song is available. Does anybody recognize it? Listen to the show here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fArWRHQFRSo . Outro is by an obscure instrumental band called 'The Hawaiians' :) Does anybody know other PA songs from recordings or even shows you can remember?

I don't the song from the Rotterdam gig, but "Cocktails for two" by Xavier Cugat was used as outto in 2015, as you can hear at the end of the Paris show on youtube. I also remember it from other streams that year (Splendour in the grass?)

I think the song you can hear at the end of the gig in Chile the same year, also on youtube, is also a Cugat song, but a different one.. i dont know the title of this one

"Cocktails for two" was also used by Gorillaz on the Humanz tour as outro, I remember it from the gig in Oslo as well as streams.

And in Bamanaz, isnt there a scene where Damon says something about playing The Liquidator before a gig during the tour for the first record?

Love the Swan from 1997 though... quite cool and fitting before Beetlebum..

Im not sure they used a specific intro during 13 tour maybe because they played mostly festivals, there were none intros or outros at Quart and Roskilde that year.

For Think Tank they had some ambient sounds playing quite low on the PA for quite some time before lurking on stage in Oslo in 2003. Cant remember any outros though..

The intro song of the 1991 Rotterdam gig appears to be this one:

Ah, thank you very much!

Especially Damon seems to be very interested in cartoon/TV music in the early and mid 90s like Mr. Rossi, The Pink Panther theme etc. I think he even said that in an interview. Nice to see that this started even in 91. And listen to The Debt Collector or Supa Shoppa...

Supa Shoppa...
Terry Hall's death made me revisit some old Specials singles I hadn't played in years, and was surprised to hear Supa Shoppa has pretty much been lifted wholesale from Friday Night Saturday Morning, the B-side of Ghost Town.

Not only is it one of the most Blur-sounding choruses I've heard, there's also a very familiar keyboard trill in the solo (go to 2:20). There's no way Damon hasn't heard this.

Damon definitely loves it. He posted this (a rare bit of actual social media usage from Damon?) after Terry’s death: https://www.instagram.com/reel/CmZU8p4o ... MyMTA2M2Y=
