Doesn't seem to be getting recognition in any of the end of the year lists. Very surprised it didn't make Rough Trades top 100. The Guardian still to announce rank 1-8 but ignored by Pitchfork, Stereogum, Quietus etc. I didn't expect it to be topping any of these, but didn't think it would be totally ignored.

This has surprised me as well, it's on the list of French mag Les inrockuptibles (#8), Aries is one of the 50 best songs of 2020 according to NME (#28th) And. That's. All.

Didn't even make 6Music's top 10 recommended albums. Would have thought it would have gone straight in to that list

I don't think Pitchfork, The Quietus or Stereogum even bothered reviewing it, did they? Presumably their albums of the year are constructed from stuff they've reviewed.

I would have thought top 10 is a push, I'm not sure it would make my top 10 of 2020, but surprised it's missed so many top 50s, inrockuptibles is the only one I'm aware of it making a presence on.

Perhaps that explains it, no idea if they did our didn't review it, I was mostly browsing lists to see if there were any albums I was unaware of being released (didn't realise Fleet Foxes had released an album this year for example).

Sterogum gave release information, but I can't find a real review

There is an interesting point in the comment section
It is. And the whole presentation under this "Song Machine" concept seems like a bad idea. These elements might keep people from taking it seriously as an album when it is right up there with the best of the year.
Which seems pretty prescient.

The fact that Pitchfork did not review it is strange considering they have done every other Gorillaz album including the b-sides album D-sides. Perhaps marketing it as a bunch of singles has somewhat backfired with a few publications and cost the album some free publicity to people who may not even know of its existence.

Cynically it may well be that Music journalists may not want something like this to catch on, to further diminish the importance of albums.

I assume the album status of it is pretty unclear. You can't talk up an episodic songs season in January but expect to be on ene dof year album lists.

I would expect Aries, Momentray Bliss and/or Pink Phantom to make end of year song lists.

Yeah I can only assume that a lot of media outlets aren't classing this as a 'proper album'

... which is a real shame. SM has turned out to be an amazing album - one of their very best in my opinion...

It's a shame but I have to agree that it doesn't feel like an album to me (and that's consistent with what they originally intended, I guess).

I find myself in the odd position of thinking that Song Machine has better songs than Humanz, but the latter is the better album. Don't ask me to explain!

Just to say I've got my ticket for the Sunday show. Not sure I will actually get time to watch it but I like to support the chaps, it sounds like they're trying something interesting here.

Didn't make the NMEs end of the year list either, which is a big shock as they are typically very enthusiastic about everything Damon does.

NME at least reviewed it, they give it 4 stars. Same mark as the Grimes, the Strokes, Halsey, BTS and a whole host of other albums that made the top 50.

Perhaps it just missed out, but I'm guessing it might not have been considered because of the format.
