Video is pretty creepy. I like the track but it doesn't immediately shout out radio friendly single.

I love it
Can’t help but get some Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino vibe from it. Maybe it’s the way the lyrics are delivered

I definitely agree with you... Again, I must hear it along w/the rest of the album to really generate a fair impression/opinion of it all.....windymiller wrote:Video is pretty creepy. I like the track but it doesn't immediately shout out radio friendly single.

- MOJO: They're the densest lyrics you've written...
DAMON: This was the first time that I used a method of writing that Lou Reed taught me. On Plastic Beach he wrote the lyrics to Some Kind of Nature while on some journey out of Manhattan and back, and inmediately came in and performed them. He said, "I don't obey the verse-chorus rule. I ignore that. All I do is write words and perform them as if I was speaking them. And if they fall in different places, I'm happy with that." And I suppose that's what I did with this. I wrote a huge amount of prose and then sang it.

Totally blown away. Almost hypnotic keyboards, pattering drums, shimmering guitars and stream of consciousness lyrics. Utterly brilliant. Can't wait to hear the album.

I agree, it was quite reminiscent of the latest AM record, which I quite enjoyed.JackS wrote:I love it

The song is not “single”-worthy, but I think that TGTB&TQ could be a little bit more experimental project, which is exiting!
P.S. Haven’t been here in a while, it is very cool to see familiar nicknames around here

RIP Mr. Okay (April 2015 - March 2016)
Re: TGTBTQ: New single "Merrie Land"
Hmm, heard it once.
Two things;
What's the time signature? Sounds a little like a waltz but not quite...
Also, we get proper strings which I don't think we've had on Good Bad Queen before (or any Damon related album for a long time? Maybe a little violin on some of the solo album).
Ends with repeat to fade.
Generally, it's kind of OK. Will grow on me I'm sure but perhaps not beyond a 7/10...

Re: TGTBTQ: New single "Merrie Land"
beautiful lyrics
MERRIE LAND
If you are leaving
Please still say goodbye
And if you are leaving can you
Leave me my Silver Jubilee mug
My old flag
My dark woods
My sunrise
If you are leaving
Can you please say goodbye
And if you are leaving
Can you leave your number
I’ll pack my case
And get in a cab and wave you goodbye
I’ll drive in the early hours down to the sea
I’ll stand on the beach where the storms amplify
All the voices I care for
And the ghosts I hold sacred
In this alignment that lasts for a day
There’s nothing that I can do anyway, anyway
What am I doing here waiting for you
So rebuild the railways
Firm up all the roads
No one is leaving now this is your home
And the horses, the foxes, the sheep and the cows
Bow down on their knees
To the fanfare of progress it’s always the same
We cheer on the clowns as they roll into town
But their faces look tired and sad to me
And carry the terrible things they have seen
All lost in a painting of a sky coloured oil
In this Merrieland
You are my crows, my window rattlers
Perfumed valley criers
Oh the dark ponds of Merrie England
The deep space echoes
Get on your mo….
What did you say? Get on your mobilised hooters …
Get hold of those mobilised hooters
You can fly to the moon one day
They are half price
This is not rhetoric
It comes from my heart
I love this country
Daneland I am your kin
You were the ones who work together
Put the money in the pockets
Of the few and their fortunes
Who crowd the school benches
And jeer at us all because they don’t care about us
They are graceless and you shouldn’t be with them
Because they are all disconnected and raised up in mansions
And two hundred plastic bags in a whales stomach
So you turn to the trident
Are we green are we pleasant?
We are not either of those Father
We are a shaking wreck where nothing grows
Lost in the sky coloured oils of Merrieland
You can fly to the moon… one day

Re: TGTBTQ: New single "Merrie Land"
Reminds me a little bit of E-Bow the Letter.
But mostly it reminds me of Bowie's Where Are We Now? Wistful, talky, deceptively catchy, even the video is similar.
So - Visconti?
I'm beyond excited for this album, especially because the of Visconti's contribution.

It's songs like this that are the reason I fell in love with Damon's songwriting in the first place. Bittersweet, witty, slightly absurd, melancholy and above all comforting. In a strange way it's actually more Blur than anything on TMW. Heavy Parklife/TGE vibes. Love it so much. Serious redeemage after those 2 MOR Gorillaz compilations. Excited for the album!!

"Get on your mo….

He was trying to say mobility scooters wasn't he? Dunno why, but I think that's what it was...
Merrie England reminds somewhat of Hallelujah Money. That certainly divided opinion when it was released ahead of Humanz, didn't it! As far as that album went, HM turned out to be a bit of an outlier....
Anyway I like Merrie England. I think...
I do, I do...
It's very sad though
had a few drinks, sorry

I put me trousers on, have a cup of tea, and think about leaving the house...

I really like it after a couple of listens.
Streets ahead of anything I have heard from Gorillaz in the past two years.
Can’t wait for the album!

I love it! For the same reasons everyone else has already mentioned... It sounds early blur for sure almost like a TGE era bside. Or anything from MLIR to TGE.. I love the structure and build up, with Damon laughing and almost sounds as if he is talking with himself. Great lyrics too
I would of been utterly confused if people on this site didn't like the track. So excited for the album.

It's indeed 3/4, though the rhythmic patterns of the different instruments make it not so obvious.Neal Zeal wrote:What's the time signature? Sounds a little like a waltz but not quite...

Re: TGTBTQ: New single "Merrie Land"
After a few listens it’s got me interested, building on what they achieved on the first album but still sounding fresh. On first listen I did think what the hell is he singing about, but the lyrics and vocal delivery are beautiful and good to hear the other band members bringing something too.
The test will be how it all sounds as part of an album, but at this moment it’s good to have TGTBATQ back.
