Damon and melancholy

Post by Pavlich » 20 Dec 2017, 13:20

What is it about Damon Albarn and melancholy? He can really nail a feeling of utter loss, or acceptance, or optimism but all in the lens of aware sadness. Whether it's Sing, To The End, This is a Low, The Universal, Yuko & Hiro, To The End, Feel Good Inc, El Manana, On Melancholy Hill, Lonely Press Play, Heavy Seas of Love, Andromeda... you know...

He is extra talented at understanding sadness and the benefit it can have, and once described On Melancholy Hill as being about the feeling of 'having your tyres let down.' He does not write songs about being crushed nor about really being overjoyed, but his instrumentals and melodies tap into a feeling.

What is it about Damon and melancholy, and is it his everlasting, serious, great legacy?

It is one aspect of his songwriting.

Though he is not e.g. Nick Drake. He does jolly singalongs as well, to great effect.
"Everybody's Doing It...So Do It Too...."
