And the thing about comeback records nowadays is that they don't usually have a follow-up. Here's some I can name off the top of my head:

Ones that definitely won't have a follow up:
-Pink Floyd's The Endless River
-Black Sabbath's 13
-Queen + Paul Rogers's Cosmos Rocks
Ones that could possibly have a follow up someday but haven't yet:
-The Who's Endless Wire
-The Yardbirds' Birdland
-ELO's Alone In The Universe
-Deep Purple's Now What?!

In fact, the only comeback records in the past 20 or so years from artists I listen to that had follow ups were Bowie's The Next Day, ELP's Black Moon and 10cc's Meanwhile (even if it's follow up barely qualified as a 10cc album). But each of those only had one. So if we even get any more Blur albums, I highly doubt we'll get more than one.

Maybe I'm overthinking this, but it just seems to me that a lot of the time comeback albums are a one-time thing.
One important difference is that Blur members are much younger, 3 of them are still in their forties. members of above mentioned bands could be their dads. I remember seeing Rolling Stones in Prague in 1998, when I was like: "this is the last time." Well, 20 years later and they are still around....

Yes, and Damon continues to be forward in his outlook.

Some artists, when they are of certain ages, merely look and act those ages and become stale, harking back to youthful glories.

Suede just followed up their comeback album Bloodsports with the second best album in their catalogue: Night Thoughts.

Damon is not very experimental in any manner. Even the Gorillaz launch is pretty poorly done and I'd say that was an EMI sanctioned thing. All of his albums have been released much like something in 1999 could have been. And for someone absolutely loaded with a house in west London et al, he definitely likes keeping his music money...

The people who are saying Blur won't record another album said the same thing right before The Magic Whip dropped...

no, the fall's definitely music. structured? mostly no. still, it's music. there's someone out there who jams to "snake in dallas" every morning.

It was a fan club exclusive, wasn't it? Not technically free. Not technically good either.

The Fall should be free considering how average (at best) it is.
