Damon joins the establishment and accepts an OBE in the New Year's Honours list...

When I saw the newsflash I was secretly hoping for "Sir Damon Albarn", I'll admit ;)

That would have been very cool! Still, an OBE is a great accomplishment!

Congrats and all, I see Twitter is giving him a pounding for excepting a Tory backed royalist establishment back slap and being a sellout!. Not seeing the same hate for Idris Elba though. ;)

It was inevitable.

But anyway, well done Damon, again. Hopefully most people simply take it for what it is - a way for the nation to recognise and celebrate exceptional figures.

Not really sure what the comparison with Idris Elba is?

Damon has been consistently vocal publicly on political/social issues, such as the war on Iraq, the work of charities in the third world etc, AFAIK Idris Elba has never particularly expressed strong personal opinions on controversial matters (not saying that this is a bad thing). Damon also expresses plenty of politics, of an almost exclusively socialist/anti-capitalist nature via his work (personally I'm in favour of his decision to express these views).

Damon however does consistently say things that don't necessarily tie in with what he claims to believe in politically, without much explanation. The anti-commercial sentiments expressed on stage during Hyde Park 2012, with crass advertising for multi-national companies in every direction being a prime example. I can see why some people might see a clash between not wanting to be used as a pawn for credibility by Tony Blair and accepting honours from the monarchy. I can also understand why many people might also reference the fact he withdrew Demon Days from the Mercurys, in protest at the organising committee, as being inconsistent with accepting official recognition from the Queen, someone in a privileged position due to circumstances beyond her control.

I do however think that were I in his position I would potentially accept something like that, not so much for myself, but more for my family, essentially making it a private celebration, rather than a ringing endorsement for the establishment. While I'm fundamentally anti-royalist on every conceivable level, I know that for my mum and elderly grandmother it would be something they would draw immense pride from. I'm by no means stating this is Damon's motivation, I don't have a clue what his thinking behind it is and he doesn't necessarily owe the public any explanation, particularly not on the basis of anonymous (with a small "a") criticism on twitter, youtube et al (FWIW I haven't seen any). However, without public explanation I think people are entitled to point out that this seems to be inconsistent with his previously publicly expressed political position.

So - Damon's good (obviously), and the Queen is, er, the Queen - but who is bad?

The bad is Damon's voice when he sings This Is A Low. :P

Has there been any quotes from the Man himself on the accolade?
