I do love how the title 'The Magic Whip' works in so many different contexts. Obviously there's the ice cream link, which can be used as a metaphor in 'Ice Cream Man', but there's also the sleazy, S&M connotations which really fits in with the dirty suggestiveness of Go Out. Oh and what Damon most often refers it to, the idea of a party whip and being kept in line (making sense for Pyongyang most obviously).

Probably their cleverest album title.
And don't forget the fireworks!
Definitely the cleverest album title.

Well you're in for a treat! As I've said already, it's a gorgeous pressing! Improves the listening experience quite a bit for me. :)

Agreed re the album title. When I first heard it I thought it was a terrible name, but it is in fact quite a layered and clever little thing. I love the idea of the magic whip being the thing used to control the population over there.

Most people I know who hate Blur just think it's about fucking ice cream

Who was it that mentioned the "magic whip" sound in the beginning of Lonesome Street is the same as in Ice Cream Man? I just noticed it, and it could indeed be a reference to the "magic whip". :P

Thanks! I was pretty pleased with myself. :) It's so funny that I was musing that the sound at the start of Lonesome Street might be supposed to be the crack of the Magic Whip. Then the repeat of it during Ice Cream Man confirmed it for me.

A subtle little touch like that makes me love the album just a little bit more. :)
