I've never known I'm afraid. Just always assumed random Damon mumbling. I think I can decifer a little bit as 'North West London' but I could easily be mishearing.

Which IIRC was a hotel address where the lyrics/song were written or something? Not that it's really very important obviously

I've read this book last summer, and depending on this quote, sooner or later we'll have the Albarn's biography:

"When I ask if he has any juicy stories from this period he laughs, saying, “Yeah, there’s plenty of anecdotes but I’m not giving them to you because they’re for my book!”"

This would be veeeery interesting ;)

The studio itself is full of keyboards and guitars, with exotic-looking African instruments propped up against the walls next to samplers and tangles of cables. Upstairs there is a large roof terrace backing on to the railway and Westway flyover. As a train trundles past he excitedly tells me of his plan to have a giant mural painted on the exterior wall depicting all the musicians who have recorded here – a roll call of names featuring, among others: Terry Hall, Martina Topley-Bird, De La Soul, Snoop Dogg, Bobby Womack and even former Oasis nemesis Noel Gallagher.
noel recorded there?

OK, so, this has always pissed me off and I feel like mentioning it again, so I'm throwing it here.

Why does Stephen Malkmus say that Blur ripped of the Pavement sound on Blur and 13?

Blur does indeed, of course, take a strong Pavement influence, but it was hardly secret was it? "Ripping off" music suggests it was done without them having mentioned any influence. And its not like they can have any sort of official credit in the booklet can they, lo-fi guitar music isn't (C)Pavement.

Yes, yes, I know he was probably bitter they'd taken the Pavement sound and had much more success with it commercially, but on that rant, he comes across pretty juvenile when erroneously using the term "rip-off".

And then...13? Uh..no. 13 is not a rip-off of Pavement. It sounds nothing like them. Neither the music or the production on 13 would ever suggest Pavement to me.

(The less said about Blur wanting to be Radiohead but failing, the better)

Malkmus has probably mellowed out significantly since then. Drop it.

I was fresh of a rant. I had to drain off the energy somewhere.

I think it was a joke, sadly. The book is from some times ago, and I didn't hear nothing more from Damon about this......
Maybe it'll appear from nothing like the Magic Whip..... let's hope that!

Don't worry, I was joking, hence the wink. :)
