mac demarco salad days

Post by metalhipslop » 29 Mar 2016, 22:53

great album, would be surprised if there were no fans of him here. his music is like salad of damon albarn, john lennon, bob dylan and stephen malkmus

Oh man, I am a big fan of his. Salad Days is a great record. I didn't like "Another One" as much, it seems more like a big EP - he toured little for it, promotion was small. But otherwise, Demarco is a good musician and is pulling a lot of good tunes. I wonder how he will evolve - so far there was only one step - from "Rock'N'Roll Night Club" to "2", and he plays similar music since then. "Another One" showed his growing interest in keyboards, so I have my hopes on a new record.

Why? I hear this statement sometimes, but I haven't found any satisfactory explanations ;)

I don't really like him either. He's a bit boring, samey, to me but its a pleasant enough sound. His guitar tone is nice.

I'm a huge fan of his. He really is a master of melodies, and he's been vocally compared to Damon quite a bit.

Another One took a little while to grow on me, so I'd give it another few tries, Consigliere. In particular, tracks like I've Been Waiting for Her and Without Me stand out for their beauty. The keyboards have been becoming more apparent, I completely agree. Maybe his next full length record will be an experimental opus.

Also, it's kind of a meme to say Mac DeMarco sucks, so don't take anything those two say seriously ;)

Mac DeMarco doesn't suck. His fans, on the other hand...

I never knew it was a meme, unlike Blur: are shite and Cardiacs, in Jay's regular read /mu/. Mac DeMarco definitely is a bit shit though.

No, and I didn't raid metalhipslop's pleasure posts. Saying "I don't really like him, as he's a bit samey to me, but I like his unique guitar tone" is not raiding.

Yeah, but that's not the same as matter-of-factly stating that he's "a bit shit".

Yeah, but as you should have assumed (because you assumed something actually erroneous of me), it was a reaction to the fact that you were suggesting my opinion wasn't actually my opinion but instead following a meme. Notice the term "a bit". I do think he's a bit shit, but the guitar sound is nice.

mac demarco is shit because all of his songs use the exact same sounds. his oozy voice, that neopsych guitar tone, that boring bass sound, and his ultra-compressed drum kit (snare/bass/cymbal/tom/hihat). i thought his stuff was cool at first, but after a while it all sorta sounded the same.

and yes, his fans suck, but it's not like mac is loads better.

Why would anyone care about the fans? I don't think that demarcoheads are that much shiter than fans of some other groups (disclaimer: I haven't really stumbled upon crazy demarcoheads, so, who knows). And considering the music - it might be samey, true, but in the contest of one-two albums it is alright, I guess. Especially when the songwriting is pretty good.

I will check Another One out once again, I haven't listened to it in its entirety since the release. The title track & A Heart Like Hers" were my favorites at the time - those are more melancholic numbers, and I think "A Heart Like Hers" is good example of Demarco growing musically and lyrically since his first releases.
