WEEZER SURVIVOR: EWBAITE (FINAL ROUND)

Post by Lt Pinkerton » 22 Dec 2015, 17:50

Album title's too long so I had to use the acronym. Anyway, Everything Will Be Alright In The End was released last year and is probably Weezer's third best album, after many years of disappointment and embarrasment. With Ric Ocasek back on board to produce and act as counselor, the band went over dozens of songs until finally having the final tracklist. It also marks the longest time Weezer have spent without releasing an album after their 1997 hiatus. In many ways, EWBAITE is pure fan-service, with Rivers again writing about the band's relationship with its audience (Shack, IHIUTH, probably Eulogy), along with demos taken from previous album recordings (Lonely Girl is obviously a Green song although arguably quite improved). It's really great, although it sounds nothing at all like the first two albums. It's really more of a 70s rock record, the kind of music that Rivers used to listen when he was a kid.

While it stands as the best-reviewed Weezer album since Pinkerton, some fans are not too big on it, particularly pointing to lackluster production and several songs being co-written in what's supposed to be a sincere, honest, comeback album. While it is far from perfect and it's flawed in many ways, I do rank it as third best and true comeback. The lead-up to the release was also an exciting time to be a Weezer fan, with trailers and snippets coming weekly. Sales-wise, it didn't really make much of an impact, probably because they chose the awful Back to the Shack as first single (despite general fan criticism to the song when it was first played live) and it's hard to buy the comeback narrative after hearing that. Good old Weezer and their self-sabotage.

You know how it goes:

Ain't Got Nobody
Back to the Shack
Eulogy for a Rock Band
Lonely Girl
I've Had It Up to Here
The British Are Coming
Da Vinci
Go Away
Cleopatra
Foolish Father
The Futurescope Trilogy: I. The Waste Land
The Futurescope Trilogy: II. Anonymous
The Futurescope Trilogy: III. Return to Ithaka

Back to the Shack. Tuneless, stupid, Beverly Hills-y.

Thanks for participating, guys! The 4 songs that have been voted are probably my least favourite from the album, but it'll probably get hard after those. The deciding vote for this round belongs to AdvertBreak, Jay or anyone who wants to join us then.

Eulogy for a Rock Band. Not a whole lot of focus in this tune, it wanders a lot. And not in the good El Scorcho way either.

I'm genuinely shocked about Shack not being eliminated! Eulogy is also kinda meh and uninspiring but I'd say the bridge saves the rest of the song.

ADIOS, EULOGY TO A ROCK BAND THAT WE LOVED THE MOST

Back to the Shack
Lonely Girl
I've Had It Up to Here
The British Are Coming
Da Vinci
Go Away
Cleopatra
Foolish Father
