Not really, given that he didn't even write any Weezer song  I know where you're coming from though.

Be Here Now is most of the time great.

I hate people who tell you Oasis only made two great albums, the first two.

Although I sorta agree with people that say the same for Weezer.

Illmatic is boring.

To me he kept Rivers in check.. like Graham does for Damon..or what John and Paul did for each other.... I feel that element is so crucial in band or otherwise they will over indulge everything, which to me each of those individuals have been guilty of when riding solo (except for Graham to be honest)....

The difference is that Rivers and Matt never were a songwriting duo, while it could be argued that the others you mentioned did write songs together or at least collaborated and helped each other. Matt didn't even write his own basslines, his presence was surely important but only on an emotional spectrum. He challenged and questioned Rivers artistically even if they didn't write together.

I believe Matt contributed somewhat more than what Rivers ever gave him credit for, but true..perhaps to that lesser degree... and you nailed it on that emotional spectrum level.... perhaps a better comparison would be to how Mike Love impacted Brian Wilson emotionally... mainly on "Smile"......

The Rentals are better than Weezer. In fact Weezer are one of the most overrated bands in history. A few great songs but in general, pretty average.

^It got a lot more praise because it is a sort of comeback record, that's for sure

Tonight is a bit shit. David Bowie (1967) is a bit shit.

The Next Day is just a little overrated (I hesitate to use "is", and not "was", because general opinion seems to be moving towards it being a 6 or 7 out of 10 record now the initial excitement is gone)

Its kinda strange how the lead singer is the least important ingredient in that band. Just goes to show how great the others are.

Yes, he writes the lyrics, but thats different from singing them.

I dunno. What would they be without his stage presence though? Great musicians, but reduced live enormously, despite his voice being like a bag of spanners. Can't sing, but what a front man.
