BECK SURVIVOR: ODELAY (WINNER: WHERE IT'S AT)

Post by Miki » 21 Sep 2015, 13:29

New Survivor and we are on Beck's fifth album (going backwards) and his most successful to date, with two and a half copies sold in the US alone: Odelay (1996).
Beck began to work on the album some time in 1995, having enlisted the Dust Brothers of Beastie Boys fame as coproducers. As Beck described it once, people were telling him the album would be career suicide, but he persevered and was vindicated in the end. It remains a classic not just in Beck's catalogue, but among albums of the 90s.

Rules again: each song is a round, and each round you vote for your LEAST FAVOURITE song and that song will then be eliminated. When a song is eliminated the results will be posted and the album track list updated without the song that was voted off, and then we continue until we are left with one song from each album, the overall winner.

Here is the first tracklist (as usual, just tracks found on the standard album version.)

1. Devils Haircut
2. Hotwax
3. Lord Only Knows
4. The New Pollution
5. Derelict
6. Novacane
7. Jackass
8. Where It's At
9. Minus
10. Sissyneck
11. Readymade
12. High Five (Rock the Catskills)
13. Ramshackle

There is a hidden track, Computer Rock, but I won't include it.

My first vote goes to the song I normally skip and that's High Five.

What, Sissyneck already has a vote?!

I vote for: High 5 (Rock The Catskills).

...

Come on, it's good but I skip it the most. It's also the least memorable track.

Nononono. Up there with Lord Only Knows and Hotwax

Live is great. He does the Sissyneck/Billie Jean Medley and brings down the house every time.

I like Sissyneck, I've always felt it belongs in a Tarantino movie. Anyway, gonna listen to the whole record before I vote.

Tie between Derelict and High Five. Up to AdverBreak to break the tie (or miko if he's still playing!)

You decide Miki, let's get past this first round.

In that case...

High Five is eliminated with 2 votes and a decider (moi  )

The new tracklist goes as follows:

1. Devils Haircut
2. Hotwax
3. Lord Only Knows
4. The New Pollution
5. Derelict
6. Novacane
7. Jackass
8. Where It's At
9. Minus
10. Sissyneck
11. Readymade
12. Ramshackle

It's between Novacane and Readymade for me, in this round, so I'll see how the vote goes, before making a decision.

I found the quote I referred to in the OP:
I had major people in the music business calling up to tell me: 'Don't release this record. It's gonna be career suicide.' This is the record that I spent $200,000 making - like, more money than anybody in my family had ever dealt with in the history of my entire family, probably back to the beginning of time, you know? That was a lot of pressure. But I grew up flipping through the cutout bins, and you'd see 10 copies in a row of a record that obviously didn't sell, and they're all, like, 20 cents a copy. When I was making 'Odelay,' I thought, at least I'll try to do something interesting so that when someone finds it in the bin 20 years later, they'll be like, 'This is kind of weird. Hello.'

^ haha, how wrong they were! This album is full of fantastic textures. I should really get the deluxe edition. I only heard Inferno and Gold Chains a few months ago when I downloaded your bootlegs, Miki. Great stuff! Do you recommend the deluxe?

I'm going to have to go with what Jay and Pinky did last round, and that's: Derelict.

Yeah, I have the Deluxe Edition and it's great to have the album, extra tracks, remixes and b-sides all in one place. Definitely worth having. I do have the classic album too though, and there are some minor differences with the Deluxe Edition.

And Gold Chains is one of my favourite Beck songs! I love it!
