What genre does these two following songs remind you of?

I was being sarcastic since they don't fit anything in particular... Beach Boys were just high during those sessions (for "Smilie Smile") and that album consisted of so many odd moments, this is what initially came out of "Smile"......A more stripped back version of the ambitious heights that Brian wanted and soon did achieve, but four decades later.....

This is late 90s Psychedelic: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpSbvtBstaM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

It struck me when I heard 'Happy Together' on radio the other day - The Turtles kind of carried on the Beach Boys sound into the later 60s.

I can definitely see that comparison....A little bit of trivia...guess who produced the Turtles' 1969 album, "Turtle Soup"? You can definitely look it up! :D

:mrgreen: A certain Mr. Davies!

I didn't know that, and I don't know the album. It sounds intriguing.

To be investigated via You Tube at some point (I assume it, or some of it, can be found there :geek: ).

Yes, it's on youtube and spotify..... Has both a "VGPS" and "Arthur" vibe to it...... the Turtles were a very interesting band..... Here's two performances from "Turtle Soup"....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bAdWi6rKWs" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSZTsJaCV6s" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Great stuff, they epitomise that period.

'The House On The Hill' really gets into its stride, once it gets going.

P.S. why do they remind me of Mike Myers films....? :D

Bowie 1976-80 (post-punk)
Paul McCartney - Darkroom (minimal drum and bass) (that pre-jungle pre-Amen sound!)
Paul McCartney - Secret Friend (deep house, or some other type of late 80s 12" house)
Paul McCartney 1979-83 (new wave)

'McCartney 2' (1980) was definitely influenced by new wave.

Indeed, but I find it surprising how much of his stuff in the era looks very forward looking from a current day perspective, or my perspective at least. Secret Friend would very much sound at home in a house DJ set. Also, Check My Machine (which 101reykjavik said was like proto-Gorillaz) made me think of two different remix albums from 1996, Bjork's Telegram (I suppose because of the first track?) and the newer stuff that comprised The Beat's BPM/MBPM.

Also, Pipes of Peace is like sophisti-pop.

I think it proves that Paul was very much part of current music in the 80s.

He epitomises how The Beatles would have been had they (like e.g. U2 or Blur) carried on indefinitely.

John seemed to be embracing such a retrospective and also modern sound as well... "Starting Over" sounded like early Elvis, but then think of the material he was doing w/Yoko.. IE..."Walking on Thin Ice"....that was ultra modern and obviously the last thing he ever recorded since those were the tapes in his hands when...well.. you know happened.....
