Songs which sound like other genres

Post by AdvertBreak » 16 Mar 2015, 23:09

Songs which are typified with one genre but remind you, or straight out sound like others

For example:
Genesis - The Brazilian (electronica, acid house)
R.E.M. - What's the Frequency, Kenneth (Britpop)
Bachman-Turner Overdrive - You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet (indie pop)
A lot of prog rock (alternative rock)

:P :P :P So yeah, can get controversial.

"We've got one more... It's called Tropicalia. Which isn't really a tropicalia song, it's a bossanova song. It'd be like calling a power ballad New Jack Swing." (Beck)
I've been drifting along in the same stale old shoes
Loose ends tyin' a noose in the back of my mind...

Nine Inch Nails' 'Everything'... is not industrial metal.

People have claimed this following Beach Boys song predated "Shoegaze"/Chillwave"/etc by 30-40 years....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RO_LX-m74uw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In a similar vein Deep Purple invented Baggy.

Re - The Beach Boys 'All I Wanna Do' - it does have an interesting sound, and seems to have an '80s-type' drum track :) But I don't think it was an unusual song for its period. Simon & Garfunkel apparently recorded a kettle drum in a lift shaft to get the powerful drum sound for e.g. 'The Boxer'.

:lol: I like that way of looking at it. The 90s indie/baggy scene was influenced by many songs like this - often (as here) they had been well-known in their original time and context.

'Hush', being a standard 'psych-rock' song from the late 60s, was covered by many e.g. Deep Purple, who had a huge hit, certainly in North America. Other versions were by Billy Joe Royal, The Love Affair and a French version by Johnny Halliday. In 1997 Kula Shaker had a big hit with the song, the first time it had been in the UK Top 40. Of the versions that I know, I prefer the one by the song's writer Joe South.

Brian Wilson has been mixed on that song....It actually featured a sitar on the demo (would love to hear that)! "Sunflower" another album everyone should check out!
