My memory is that around the time of 'Grey Lantern' they were making their mark amongst several others, and on the cusp of more success. They had a lot of exposure via the music press and radio.

But by the time of 'Six', which I don't really remember, Britpop had burned out taking Mansun and others with it.

Hi Mr. Magpie,

I hope I haven't missed any references to it on the forum, but what is the subject of the book? Sounds intriguing :)

A damn shame because Six is a fuckin masterpiece!

It'll be similar in format to my two Blur books but also have more biographical info as I've been in regular contact with Paul and Andie and both are eager to help me out.

:D Wishing you every success with this. It will be an aspect of 'Britpop' that might not otherwise be told.

And, yes, I am happy for you to use the concert ticket scan, which will embellish the detail. :)

Has anyone else here gotten Paul's solo album Spooky Action, released last week. It's been on NON-STOP rotation in my house & car. I've probably listened to it 10 times already. It's fucking fantastic!!!

Since my previous posts on this thread, I have bought a copy of the 'Six' album which I think is good.

Did the singles from it get much UK airplay at the time? I have little memory of them - I have a feeling that Radio One and Virgin 1215 did not A-list them.

Yeah they are. The album is fucking amazing, no joke. It sounds sort of like what the next Mansun album would've sounded like, but it's also different enough to be his solo album. The sound, songs, singing, instrumentation, production, etc is unmistakably Draper.

Six is their masterpiece, what a great album. I believe "Negative" and "Legacy" were fairly successful singles when they came out.

I heard Spooky Action last week. I liked it a lot but I recon its one that'll grow on me even still.

It blew me away on the first listen, but it gets better and better with each time I go through it. Every time I listen to it, I find a new favorite track on it.

I wasn't able to listen to Radio One as much at that time, especially in the evenings, compared to when 'Attack Of The Grey Lantern' came out. Though at the time I certainly remember e.g. The Manics and Embrace getting much airplay.

I only have vague memories of the 'Six' and its singles - indie singles nearly always came straight in & out of the top ten in one week, but by Sept 98 'Britpop' was passe.

So I suspect that Mansun were not getting the attention they should have. E.g. this was certainly the case with The Super Furry Animals.
