I've heard it, it's better than his first one.

That's what I'd heard. I'll have to give it a listen.

Got the first one and saw him play a great gig in Oxford. I've just ordered the second album.

^ Watched it last night. Some good tunes. Typical BBC 'insider-y' audience I suspected - reminded me of the Blur session at the BBC. A room packed full of people in the know to get the tickets but don't actually care about the band.

I've yet to hear the new record. I liked the first enough, though I thought it translated better live - caught him twice last year and he was brilliant.

Impressions on the new record.

Good points about it: it is very listenable and perfectly enjoyable; Johnny Marr's voice is pleasant; his guitar work terrific, as you'd expect.

On the downside... it's not an especially memorable or groundbreaking album (though who says all albums have to be?); it could have been released in 1983 exactly like this, the production is not very imaginative, but it does capture a certain rawness, energy and immediacy in the music. Perhaps the retro sound is deliberate in that respect.

On first listen the tracks that stood out for me were Dynamo, Candidate, The Trap (so 80s it hurts, but in a good way) and This Tension (this maybe the most Smithesque moment of the album).

What's missing is a track or two to break up the flow a little. It all feels a bit samey and therefore it ends up a little flat, especially on first listen. There are also a couple of fillers that one can easily skip (25 Hours, Speak Out Reach Out...)

I haven't had a chance to analyze the lyrics to comment on it.

Overall, it's not a masterpiece, but it has redeeming qualities and it's a pleasant listen. I'd say it's a 7/10
