The Kinks Thread

Post by KingLouieLouie76 » 20 Sep 2014, 21:16

Ray has, is and always will be a genius....Dave is one of the most underrated guitarist of his generation, Peter was to me their most proficient bassist in capturing the Kinks distinctive sound, and Mick was one steady drummer. I do love the later contributions of John Dalton and Jim Rodford respectively on bass though.

My favorite album definitely is "Village Green Preservation Society", but I love all eras of their music...however.. not too keen on post '84 material (after they dismissed Mick Avory). I was hoping the original four reunited, but Peter Quaife's health vastly worsened which lead to his untimely death.

I tend to favor their music from '64-'69 and then again from '77-'82.....True, that doesn't include most of John Dalton's time in the band, but nothing against him..that's when Ray was going through major bouts of depression which impacted their sound quite a bit...but thankfully he overcame that.

The Kinks could have been even more famous than the Beatles if it wasn't for them being banished from the US during their apex and it's always conflicted why that ban was imposed in the first place.

I hope there are several other Kinks fans on here to make this thread a major one!

Please finally become reality!

Although, no way does Ray do this minus Dave, or it's obviously such an outrage!

I agree with everything you said. I'm not sure I want a reunion only because I'd hate to be disappointed but at the same time, how can I NOT want one?

The following is the most likeliest scenario....Dave issuing Ray this ultimatum: "Ray, I won't participate in any Kinks' reunion when Mick is involved, or else!"

C'mon Dave, let bygones be bygones, it's been over 30-years already since Mick was ousted and he's the only drummer that can capture the Kinks' distinctive sound!

The crazy thing is, Dave has said repeatedly over the years that he always regrets Mick leaving the band, yet every time Ray insists he be involved in a reunion, Dave scuttles it. So weird!

Yeah...it just gets beyond annoying how he contradicts himself..Dave seems to enjoy toying w/everyone....I bet he'd reconsider the first moment Ray seriously threatens to reunite the band w/out Dave......But...that obviously isn't a reunion whatsoever...To me...they really missed out reforming when Pete was still alive, but I guess his health problems were really severe since several years back. I wish they managed to perform together during either the US and/or UK Rock & Roll HoF jams...but instead they had Rodford on bass and Henrit on drums..such a shame!

Yeah, the time to do it was before Pete died...Pete desperately wanted to, as well. That reminds me, Dave Quaife sent me Pete's book and I've yet to read it! Must do so ASAP!

Yeah, in fact I was going to ask if you had the chance to read/review that book, however, I know you've been occupied with your move and reading/reviewing other books as well!

I'm torn on who I would like the bassist to be if they did indeed reunite. I like both Dalton and Rodford quite a bit...wouldn't mind if they split the role......

KLL76 - yes agree that VGPS was a great album. Much overlooked originally because it was backward-looking, in the brave new world of 1968.

Yet it was only highlighting the things that were changing.

Not yet but I'm gonna! I've only got it in ebook format on my iPad from Dave, supposed to be getting a print copy soon too although it's been continually delayed (publisher problems)

Oh wow....I can certainly understand that.. how's your transition to PA been thus far? I would definitely see the Kinks in concert if they reunited again...but wouldn't without Dave obviously.....

Yeah, I moved 2000 miles away from where I grew-up, but by choice though...However, I don't miss Michigan whatsoever and it's already been over 12-years!

Have you ever seen Dave live before? Does he ever perform "Death of a Clown"?

Never seen him live, no idea even what songs he typically does but I'd imagine he must do that one, right? It's one of his classics.

I just answered my own question: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETy5j5NoDUw" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

In fact, he's performed it solo quite a bit...For some odd reason I always thought he was ashamed of that song in the first place and tried to distance himself from it.. but obviously I'm wrong in this instance... Not like I'm implying I'm against the song myself, but it was so rather different than anything else he ever did (maybe too commercial?).....
