Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

The debut is an earnest album almost trying to grab attention, and very very 2000s in terms of that Briton sound. Reminds me a lot of something like A Weekend In The City. The second one is a resignation and maturity... I dunno.

Can't tell you how much I regret not grabbing a photo with him. It was no later than about 10am too. Fuck me dead.

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Live Performances Thread

These shows sound great, but my big takeaway is how excited Damon seems to be. He's living this project and this tour. So many videos on Instagram of him having some laughs with the audience (who seem like funny fuckers it has to be said - seems there's a good, well-hearted cheeky demographic to the...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Live Performances Thread

Wow, so grateful for all the long responses. The forum is dying out yet so many on here not only offer regular opinions, but long, detailed responses which set the time and place. I couldn't imagine seeing Damon in a tiny venue like that with a quiet pint before but all the better for you lads enjoy...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

I doubt Damon has any interest whatsoever in where this album charts. Am a bit surprised by the performance as it felt like the debut album had built up a pretty big cult following. But let's face it a lot of Clash fans are not about anymore and I wouldn't expect US Gorillaz fans to "get" this proj...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Live Performances Thread

Saw a photo here or on instagram and Damon seemed to be nursing a dark ale. I've only ever been to the Brick Lane location (I'm Australian) but is there a pub out the back or something? Something about him a pint...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

Promotion was too expensive? I don't know what label they're with, but even small indie bands have posters on the tube. They're all big names with a long history in music, they could very easily ask to be on a talk show type thing for a performance. But ahhh the biggest thing... The internet! It's f...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

Yeah the marketing for this was terrible. It's okay to just put out The Now Now or The Fall because they're minimally made efforts and frankly dodgy blows to Damon Albarn's discography. But this. This is a great record and it'll definitely appeal to the people who'd know any or all of the members (w...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

I wonder how this band will go? They could really go heavy on the festival circuit and do the right appearances and get a good name for themselves going.

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

First... Drifters & Trawlers... I was thinking where was that melody from, maybe even possibly a kid's song? It's the verses of Six Months In A Leaky Boat! Anyway, I weirdly like the ad-libbed feeling lyrical flub in Merrie Land, it just feels authentic and rugged but mostly considered. There aren't...

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Album Thread

The Last Man To Leave has a yelpy vocal that reminds me so much of early Kele Okereke for Bloc Party.

Re: TGTBTQ: Merrie Land Live Performances Thread

Daaaaamn that is awesome. Love these tiny gigs. Would be unreal if they dedicated the next few months to doing them on and off again but as is Damon of the 2010s, these could literally be the only shows – no advertisement, few clues. Have fun. They look unreal.

Re: TGTB&TQ: Telegraph interview 20 January 2007

Yeah this is a great old interview. I made sure to chuck the curry on before I got through it because it's a good read. Simultaneously made me want to listen to This Is A Low and give The Clash a crack, as well as read about Simonen more and like Damon again. It was definitely lop-sided on those two...
