Re: Beach Boys Thread

Yes I've checked out some of them. My thoughts: Friends I think is great and works really well as an album as a whole. It's got a lovely feel to it and is strong right the way through. Sunflower and Surf's Up are perhaps like consistent but arguably have higher individual moments - This Whole World...

Re: The Beatles Thread

It seems like Paul is trying too hard with Egypt Station to be trendy and modern. I wish he'd just be himself because everything from Flaming Pie through NEW showed that he can still be great at it. Egypt Station just isn't very memorable. A few top-shelf tunes on there but the rest of pretty forge...

Re: Beach Boys Thread

I also had some problems getting into Smiley Smile, but (as suggested by Louis above) it really needs to be divorced from Smile to appreciate it. That ins't easy to do when you come to Smiley smile after having hearing the Smile sessions - Smile after all is this huge, intricate, epic song cycle me...

Re: The Beatles Thread

What did you all think of Egypt Station? I thought it was mostly good but not as strong as NEW. I disliked most of it.... I only listened to it once though.... However, I was not a fan of "NEW" either. I haven't like mostly anything he's released since "Flowers in the Dirt". Regarding "Revolver" an...

Re: Beach Boys Thread

I find it difficult to choose between those 'All I Wanna Do' versions Louie. I often like the rawness of demos, but I think the final version here has a flowing completeness. I think that by the later 60s, the 'wall of sound' production technique was not helping the Beach Boys. I must admit I am no...

Re: The Beatles Thread

I consider "Revolver" their best album and I feel "Sgt. Pepper" hasn't aged that well whatsoever and has become vastly overrated over the years. I like 'Sgt Pepper' but like many of the great albums of 1967 it is a 'timepiece'. i.e. it could only have been recorded in that year (or, certainly later...

Re: Beach Boys Thread

Don’t like Smiley Smile that much. Pretty weak compared to the Smile Sessions, in my opinion at least. The sessions box set is how the album would have sounded and the differences are huge, especially Vega-Tables and Wonderful. Completely different. Yeah.... several others share the exact same stan...

Re: The Beatles Thread

I went to see Paul McCartney last night. Simply amazing. He played for a full 3 hours. I’ve seen many artists play Beatles cover versions at gigs over the years but seeing one of the guys who actually wrote them play was unreal. As if that wasn’t enough they played Get Back in the encore with Ronni...

Re: Beach Boys Thread

I saw your posts in the Beatles Thread and wanted to jump in here. I think Pet Sounds is a great album. That said...I think Smile would have eclipsed it massively if it had been released at the time as Brian had intended. I was listening to The Smile Sessions box set th other day (on repeat!!) and ...

Re: The Beatles Thread

Very true. And to my ears even when they went for the more interesting stuff in '66-'68 that surf sound was STILL there below the surface which kind of kills it for me a bit. Think of the White Album where every chord progression reminds you of A Hard Day's Night and you'll see what I mean. I gener...

Re: The Beatles Thread

I've just never gotten the whole Beach Boys thing (no offense) and personally I've never bought putting them on the same level as the Beatles. It's just personal opinion, and I do really like a LOT of the BB's output in the 1960s, but it always seems a bit forced to put Brian Wilson up there with L...
